Pelirrojo toughs it out at Kilmore to break Maiden status

Pelirrojo has relished the uphill straight at Kilmore to record his first victory, much to the delight of many punters.

Jumping from near the outside gate over the 1900m journey, jockey John Keating allowed Pelirrojo to roll forward in line with his racing style. Although being wide exiting the straight the first time, he was in an excellent rhythm and allowed to roll along at his own tempo outside the leader.

A mid-race move by another runner saw Pelirrojo land the perfect 'one out one back' sit with cover and it was there he stayed until approaching the final bend. Near the point of the turn Keating angled Pelirrojo out 3 wide to challenge the leaders and it was there when 'Pelli' put the pedal to the metal and raced to the front with 250m to go.

With challengers coming from left, right and centre, Keating rode desperately on the big boy and managed to get him over the line to record that elusive victory. It was a win for the bookies and some punters after paying a massive $27.10 on S-TAB in what we believe was a long celebrated night.

Congratulations to all connections on his win, in what must have been very satisfying after taking on the horse from other owners and giving him a second chance.
