Stanley Lands Debut Winner

Caulfield Cup-winning jockey Brent Stanley kicked off his training career in style on Wednesday saddling up a winner in his very first race.

Gypsy’s Best proved too good in the Midland Irrigation Restricted 62 Handicap (1200m) at Kyneton holding off a fast-finishing Beaumaris with Projects crossing the line in third.

Brent’s brother Nathan rode Gypsy’s Best to victory.

Stanley, who won the Caulfield Cup aboard Arctic Scent in 1996 as a 17-year-old, only recently branched out as a trainer in his own right after a period as an assistant with Malua Racing.

“Great result, it’s a great feeling,” Stanley said.

“I told him to go forward from the gate, she travelled well and I said when you go for her make it a good thing because she’s fit and going well.”

Nathan booted Gypsy’s Best well clear in the straight and did enough to hold on for the win.

“When she pulled out I gave her a squeeze and she went really quick, she’s got a good turn of foot,” the jockey said.

“I was hoping I didn’t go too early and I didn’t.

“It’s just another day at the races but very nervous times for Brent having his first runner. Don’t get me wrong I felt a few of the nerves for him so it was good to get her over the line.

“He’s putting the right foot forward to start off it’s really exciting for him.”
